Modelling and simulation of VSC-HVDC connection for offshore wind power plants
Several large offshore wind power plants (WPP)
are planned in the seas around Europe. VSC-HVDC is a suitable
means of integrating such large and distant offshore WPP which
need long submarine cable transmission to the onshore grid.
Recent trend is to use large wind turbine generators with full
scale converters to achieve an optimal operation over a wide
speed range. The offshore grid then becomes very much different
from the conventional power system grid, in the sense that it is
connected to power electronic converters only. A model of the
wind power plant with VSC-HVDC connection is developed in
PSCAD for time-domain dynamic simulation. This paper
presents the modelling and simulation of such a system. A single
line to ground fault has been simulated and fault currents for the
grounded and ungrounded offshore grid system is obtained
through simulation and then compared.Postprint (published version
Robust Bayesian Pitch Tracking Based on the Harmonic Model
Fundamental frequency is one of the most important characteristics of speech and audio signals. Harmonic model-based fundamental frequency estimators offer a higher estimation accuracy and robustness against noise than the widely used autocorrelation-based methods. However, the traditional harmonic model-based estimators do not take the temporal smoothness of the fundamental frequency, the model order, and the voicing into account as they process each data segment independently. In this paper, a fully Bayesian fundamental frequency tracking algorithm based on the harmonic model and a first-order Markov process model is proposed. Smoothness priors are imposed on the fundamental frequencies, model orders, and voicing using first-order Markov process models. Using these Markov models, fundamental frequency estimation and voicing detection errors can be reduced. Using the harmonic model, the proposed fundamental frequency tracker has an improved robustness to noise. An analytical form of the likelihood function, which can be computed efficiently, is derived. Compared to the state-of-the-art neural network and nonparametric approaches, the proposed fundamental frequency tracking algorithm has superior performance in almost all investigated scenarios, especially in noisy conditions. For example, under 0 dB white Gaussian noise, the proposed algorithm reduces the mean absolute errors and gross errors by 15% and 20% on the Keele pitch database and 36% and 26% on sustained /a/ sounds from a database of Parkinson's disease voices. A MATLAB version of the proposed algorithm is made freely available for reproduction of the results. 1 1An implementation of the proposed algorithm using MATLAB may be found in https://tinyurl.com/yxn4a543
Associations between duck harvest, hunting wing ratios and measures of reproductive output in Northern Europe
Ducks are important game species, hunted in several countries throughout their annual cycle. We investigated whether the size of the annual duck harvest in Finland and Denmark reflected annual reproductive output in three common quarry duck species. Finland represents an important breeding area and Denmark important staging/wintering grounds for common teal (Anas crecca), Eurasian wigeon (Mareca penelope) and common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula). We assessed whether (i) annual duck harvest in these two countries correlated with variation in Finnish reproductive output or adult population size during 1990-2016 and (ii) variation in reproductive output of Finnish ducks was reflected in the juvenile ratios of birds harvested in Finland (2005-2007, 2014-2016) or Denmark (1990-2016). We hypothesised that variation in Finnish reproductive output would positively affect the size and juvenile ratio of the harvest, and that this effect would be stronger closer to the breeding grounds. Our data showed that the annual harvest of goldeneye in Finland was positively correlated with reproductive output, a desirable basis for applying sustainable management to this species. Teal and wigeon have much longer, more complex flyways, and their harvest did not mirror the annual production of young, although the wigeon harvest in Denmark increased with increasing juvenile ratio there. For these populations, we need to better define population units if we are to be able to assess harvest sustainability. We urgently need to monitor duck breeding success and harvest at larger spatial scales to support a comprehensive analysis of how well the harvest reflects reproductive output.Peer reviewe
